Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 Recap: Repair Over Replacement

September 8-12, 2026 | Messe Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main, Germany | 112,000+ trade visitors from 173 countries | 4,400 exhibitors from 80 countries | 70 percent of trade visitors from abroad | Around 500 events | Next edition: September 5-9, 2028

Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 closed on Saturday with more visitors, more exhibitors and, for the first time, a motorsport pit lane and an off-road park on the grounds. The attendance figures are good. The more durable story is what the industry chose to reward.

According to Messe Frankfurt's final report, more than 112,000 trade visitors from 173 countries came to Frankfurt over the five days, and 4,400 exhibitors from 80 countries took part. Seventy percent of trade visitors came from outside Germany. The organizer reported 96 percent visitor satisfaction, 89 percent of visitors saying they would recommend the fair, and 90 percent of exhibitors planning to return in two years.

"Not only has the mood been extremely positive throughout this intensive five-day trade fair, but there has also been a visible increase in the number of exhibitors and visitors," said Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

Read the week's two award programs side by side, though, and a pattern emerges that none of the headline numbers capture. On the supplier side and on the carmaker side, the winners kept pointing the same way: repair and remanufacture components, electric-vehicle batteries and motors included, rather than replace them. Battery packs, electric drive motors, used-part returns and refurbished spare parts all took prizes. For an industry built on selling replacement parts for combustion engines, that is the most consequential signal of the edition.

How Much Did Automechanika Actually Grow?

It depends on which 2024 number you use.

The final report sets its 2026 figure against a footnote that reads "2024: 104.750 visitors." On that basis, trade attendance grew by about 7 percent. But Messe Frankfurt's own 2024 closing release reported "108,000 visitors from 172 countries," and that is the figure most coverage has carried since, including our own Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 guide. Against 108,000, growth is closer to 4 percent.

The 2026 release describes its headline as trade visitors, while the 2024 release said visitors, so the two figures may not count the same thing. The organizer has not explained the restatement. Both readings show growth. The smaller growth rate, about 4 percent, is the one calculated against the 108,000 baseline Messe Frankfurt published in 2024.

The other measures are steadier than the headline suggests:

  • Exhibitors rose from 4,200 to 4,400, roughly 5 percent, landing at the bottom of the 4,400-4,500 range Messe Frankfurt forecast before the show.
  • Exhibitor countries were flat at 80. Visitor countries went from 172 to 173.
  • The international share of trade visitors was unchanged at 70 percent, the same proportion reported in 2024.
  • Visitor satisfaction of 96 percent is described in the final report as four percent higher than in 2024. The 2024 release put the figure at 94 percent, a two-point difference on the published numbers, although the two releases word the measure differently.
  • No exhibition space figure was published. Before the show, Messe Frankfurt said some 300,000 square meters had been booked and the grounds were sold out. The 2024 closing release cited 320,000 square meters across 26 hall levels. Booked stand space and total area are not necessarily the same measure, so this is not evidence the show shrank, but it is a number worth asking for.

For market context, Messe Frankfurt's pre-show release cited a Frost & Sullivan forecast of 5.8 percent growth for the global automotive aftermarket in 2026. That forecast is not directly comparable with changes in exhibitor or visitor numbers, but it establishes the broader setting: Automechanika grew while serving an aftermarket that was itself expected to expand. The show's increase was healthy rather than exceptional, and a different result from IFA 2026, which increased attendance while its home market contracted.

The Industry Rewarded Repair Over Replacement

The Automechanika Innovation Awards were presented at a gala on the evening of the first show day. A 17-member international jury chose winners in ten categories plus a Green Award, from 185 entries and 47 finalists.

Four of the eleven winners were about keeping parts in service longer, three by repairing or remanufacturing them and one by making them last:

  • Green Award: Autocraft Solutions Group, for its REVIVE EV Battery Workshops, which repair and remanufacture high-voltage battery packs for return into vehicles rather than replacing whole packs.
  • Sustainable Drive Solutions: Borg Automotive, for a remanufacturing process for electric drive motors, already realized on samples from two different carmakers. The award entry stresses that it comes from an independent remanufacturer, not an OEM.
  • Circular Economy & Remanufacturing: rema.germany, for a digital system that captures and inspects returned used parts for remanufacturing, using guided tablet workflows and photo documentation to cut disputes and unnecessary transport.
  • Advanced Parts & Vehicle Technologies: MEYLE, for an HD brake disc with wear and long-term corrosion protection that the company says lasts longer and produces fewer brake emissions.

The carmakers said the same thing the same day, in a different competition with a different jury. At the first Automotive Aftersales Award, Volvo won Battery & High-Voltage Services for battery repair, replacement of individual modules and dedicated battery centers. Renault won Maintenance & Repair Solutions for renative, its program built on refurbished spare parts. Subaru's special prize cited, among other things, a preference for repairing components before replacing them.

Taken together, six prizes across two separately judged award programs directly rewarded repair or remanufacturing, while a seventh, MEYLE's, rewarded longer component life. Here is why we think that matters, as our own read rather than the organizer's.

The traditional aftermarket business is built on wear: filters, pads, clutches, exhaust parts, the steady churn of a combustion engine. Electric vehicles have fewer of those parts, and far more of their value sits in a small number of very expensive components. When a battery pack or drive motor fails outside warranty, the choice between replacing it and repairing it decides whether an older EV is worth keeping at all. Whoever owns the repair capability owns that decision. That an independent remanufacturer won for electric motors, and an independent specialist took the Green Award for battery packs, suggests the independent aftermarket intends to compete for that work rather than cede it to dealer networks.

Regulation is pushing in the same direction on brakes. Euro 7 brings brake particle emissions into EU vehicle rules for the first time, applying to new passenger car and van types from 29 November 2026 and to all new vehicles in those categories from 29 November 2027. That turns low-wear, low-dust brake hardware from an engineering preference into a commercial argument, which is the context for MEYLE's award.

Two of the non-remanufacturing winners are worth singling out for workshops. MAHA's MAIA is a fully autonomous inspection robot that runs a body scan with AI damage detection and cost calculation, headlight measurement, contactless wheel alignment and tire inspection in a single pass, without dedicated infrastructure. Bosch's ESI[tronic] AI Assistant adds a chatbot-style search across Bosch's internal repair knowledge base to its diagnostic software, aimed at cutting troubleshooting and document-search time. POLYTOP's BLUE LINE products are designed to let car washes with biological wastewater treatment clean vehicles without using drinking water.

"An idea becomes an innovation when it makes a difference in practice: when it improves processes, conserves resources, opens up new possibilities or solves a specific problem," said Michael Johannes, Brand Manager Automechanika at Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH.

BYD Wins the Newcomer Prize at the First Aftersales Award

The Automotive Aftersales Award was new for 2026, created jointly by Automechanika, the German magazine Auto Bild and VDIK, the association of international motor vehicle manufacturers in Germany. It was presented on Tuesday, the show's first day. Twenty-nine national and international brands entered, and winners were decided in three stages: an Auto Bild reader vote, results from the Institute for Automotive Economics (IfA) dealer satisfaction monitor, and an expert jury.

BYD's win is the one to note. A Chinese carmaker that has only recently expanded into Europe's passenger-car market was recognized not for its vehicles but for how quickly it has stood up the unglamorous parts of ownership: technician training, parts logistics and diagnostics. That is the part of market entry that historically took newcomers years, and it is the part European dealers and independent workshops will increasingly compete with.

"Strong service creates customer loyalty and trust," said Imelda Labbé, President of VDIK, at the ceremony (translated from German).

HighTech4Mobility: Software Got Its Own Building

The most strategically significant new format was HighTech4Mobility, which gave software-defined vehicles, connected systems and digital services a dedicated home in the Festhalle for the first time. Software companies, start-ups and representatives from workshops, retail and industry met there to discuss vehicle data, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and aftermarket business models, through specialist presentations, application examples and a new networking lounge. The format was developed ahead of the show with events involving Google Cloud, Boston Consulting Group and Benteler Mobility.

The reason it belongs at an aftermarket fair is straightforward. As vehicle functions move into software, diagnosis, repair and upgrades increasingly depend on access to vehicle data, and whoever controls that access controls a growing share of service revenue. Bosch's AI Assistant taking the AI category and Knorr-Bremse's workshop data platform taking the data and cybersecurity category are the show-floor versions of the same shift.

What the final report does not provide is any measure of HighTech4Mobility's own scale: no participant count, session count or attendance figure. As a first edition, it is too early to say whether it became a destination or remained a side program. That is a fair question to put to the organizers before committing sponsorship to it in 2028.

Pit Lane, Experience Park and the Spectacle Question

The other new formats were built for experience rather than debate. The 200-meter Automechanika Pit Lane, under the arcades of Hall 4, showcased race cars, mechanics and motorsport personalities, with test drives and the chance to sit in race cars. The new Experience Park, in front of Halls 9 and 11, put off-road mobility on show, including a Unimog, interactive challenges and a rollover simulator. Next to the established Future Mobility Park test circuit, four of the nine universities exhibiting at the show presented alternative-drive vehicles they had built themselves. In Hall 11.1, the new Classic Alliance with FIVA, Bosch, DAT, Eucon and ROWE brought live restorations and specialist talks to the classic car area, alongside the presentation of Auto Bild Klassik's "Der Goldene Klassiker".

Not everyone was convinced. In a commentary published the day after the show closed, reporters.de argued that the outdoor spectacle risks blurring the profile of what is fundamentally a workshop and parts fair, noting that Frankfurt has already lost the IAA motor show to Munich. The piece made three further points: that parts of the halls appeared heavily shaped by suppliers from China and other Asian countries while the final report gives no breakdown of exhibitors by origin; that electromobility still appeared as islands on the grounds rather than running through the halls; and that a stated intention to return is not the same as an order book.

Our view is that both things can be true. Experiential formats generate footfall, media coverage and, as the next section shows, a recruiting pipeline the industry badly needs. But the critique lands on a real gap in the published data. The final report measures mood, satisfaction, intention and attendance. It does not report business outcomes, exhibitor origin or how much of the gate the outdoor program drew. The test for 2028 is whether the organizer adds any of those.

AMBITION: Recruiting Became a Headline Number

AMBITION, the careers format for younger audiences that debuted in Hall 3.1 in 2024, returned larger and more visible in the Festhalle. The organizer says the format has now won two awards. More than 4,600 pupils, students and trainees attended, getting career orientation, direct contact with employers and a stage program of presentations, trainings and masterclasses on new technologies.

This is where the repair story and the recruiting story meet. Repairing high-voltage batteries and remanufacturing electric motors requires technicians qualified to work on high-voltage systems, and the aftermarket's skills shortage is well documented. A format that puts thousands of potential apprentices in front of employers is not a side attraction for an industry that needs to retrain its workforce around electric vehicles. It is infrastructure.

One detail the final report leaves open: it does not say whether the 4,600 AMBITION attendees are counted within the 112,000 trade visitor figure. If they are, they would account for roughly 4 percent of the total, a meaningful share when the difference between the two possible growth rates is about 3 percentage points.

What It Means for Exhibitors

Treat the growth as encouraging, not transformational. Trade visitor numbers increased by roughly 4 to 7 percent depending on the baseline, while exhibitors rose by about 5 percent. That supports a steady 2028 plan, but not an assumption that the show will produce a step change in audience on its own.

If you sell EV repair capability, the stage is set. Battery pack remanufacturing, electric motor remanufacturing, core returns and module-level battery service all won major awards on both the supplier and carmaker sides. Frankfurt 2028 is likely to be where that category is judged, and early positioning matters.

Ask for the numbers the final report leaves out. Before committing 2028 budget, request exhibition space, the split of exhibitors by region, the definition behind the 2024 restatement, whether AMBITION attendees count in the trade visitor total, and any hall-level traffic data. If an organizer cannot supply them, weigh the headline figures accordingly.

Separate footfall from buyers. Pit Lane and the Experience Park were designed to draw crowds, but the final report gives no traffic figures for either. If your stand is near them, ask for any traffic data, and what share of it was purchasing decision-makers, before paying a premium for the location.

Plan early. With 90 percent of exhibitors saying they intend to return, including 93 percent of German exhibitors, prime positions for 2028 may become competitive early. A return intention is not a booking, but it is a reason not to leave stand planning late.
