September Is the Busiest Month on the Trade Show Calendar

September is the busiest month in the TradeShowBuzz 2026 database, with more than 360 published events opening during the month. The difficulty is not finding a worthwhile show - it is choosing between major events that collide across Europe, North America and Asia.

Many of the month's biggest industrial exhibitions are biennial, which means skipping their 2026 editions can mean waiting until 2028. That is the fact worth planning around. Germany alone runs eleven significant international floors in four weeks, seven of them biennial. The week of September 14 is one of the most congested stretches of the 2026 trade show calendar: IMTS in Chicago, AMB in Stuttgart, IAA Transportation in Hannover, Dreamforce in San Francisco, GSX in Atlanta and three separate Paris floors all open within days of each other.

The Biggest Floors of the Month

Ranked by the attendance each show reported at its most recent edition. These are historical figures, not forecasts for 2026 - but they are the best available guide to the scale you should plan for.

Two things stand out. First, InnoTrans and IAA Transportation rank third and fourth overall, yet both can receive less planning attention than better-known events such as IFA and IMTS - and both are biennial. Second, Automechanika has by far the highest exhibitor count, which gives it by far the largest supplier roster in the group even though it ranks fifth on visitors.

IFA Berlin - September 4-8 | Messe Berlin

IFA opens the month and effectively opens the global consumer-electronics buying season. The 2025 edition drew around 220,000 visitors from 140 countries and more than 1,900 exhibitors from 49 countries. Because IFA lands right before the Q4 retail cycle, it functions as much as a buying floor as a launch stage - which is what separates it from a pure press event.

Automechanika Frankfurt - September 8-12 | Messe Frankfurt

The world's leading automotive aftermarket show, and the largest exhibitor roster of the month: the 2024 edition hosted 4,200 exhibiting companies from 80 countries and 108,000 visitors from 172 countries. Parts, workshop equipment, diagnostics, bodywork, and increasingly EV service infrastructure. If you sell into the aftermarket anywhere outside North America, this is the floor that matters - and it's biennial, so 2026 or 2028.

IMTS - September 14-19 | McCormick Place, Chicago

IMTS is North America's largest manufacturing technology show. The 2024 edition recorded 89,020 registrants from 110 countries across 1,737 exhibitors. It runs biennially in even years, so 2026 is an edition year, and it remains one of the most important industrial events on the US calendar. Note the direct collision with AMB in Stuttgart (September 15-19): the global metalworking audience is split across two continents that week.

Tokyo Game Show - September 17-21 | Makuhari Messe

TGS expands to five days for the first time in 2026: business days on September 17-18, then three public days from September 19-21. The 2025 edition drew 263,101 visitors and a record 1,136 exhibitors from 47 countries, making it the largest single event of the month by attendance. The two dedicated business days make it a genuine B2B floor for anyone selling into the Asian games market, not just a consumer showcase.

The German September

No country gets a month like this. Germany hosts eleven major international floors in four weeks, and several overlap:

• SMM - September 1-4 | Hamburg. The leading international maritime and shipbuilding trade fair. Organisers expect more than 2,200 exhibitors and around 45,000 participants for 2026.
• IFA Berlin - September 4-8 | Berlin.
• Automechanika Frankfurt - September 8-12 | Frankfurt.
• IAA Transportation - September 15-20 | Hannover (press day September 14). The global commercial-vehicle show: trucks, vans, buses, logistics and transport technology. The 2024 edition drew around 145,000 visitors and nearly 1,700 exhibitors from 41 countries.
• AMB - September 15-19 | Stuttgart. Metalworking and machine tools, running head-to-head with IMTS.
• GaLaBau - September 15-18 | Nuremberg. Landscaping, urban green space and grounds machinery.
• Kind + Jugend - September 15-17 | Cologne. The international juvenile products fair.
• InnoTrans - September 22-25 | Berlin. The world's largest rail transport technology fair, complete with outdoor track display. The 2024 edition set records with around 170,000 visitors from 133 countries and 2,940 exhibitors from 59 countries - making it the largest trade fair in Germany this month.
• WindEnergy Hamburg - September 22-25 | Hamburg. Around 1,600 exhibitors expected across onshore and offshore wind.
• DMEXCO - September 23-24 | Cologne. Europe's major digital marketing and advertising-tech gathering.
• REHACARE International - September 23-26 | Düsseldorf. Rehabilitation, care and accessible living.

The pattern worth noticing: seven of these eleven events are biennial, and 2026 is an edition year for all seven. SMM, Automechanika Frankfurt, IAA Transportation, AMB, GaLaBau, InnoTrans and WindEnergy Hamburg all run on a two-year cycle landing in even years - they exist in 2026, 2028, 2030 and not in between. If your market touches maritime, the automotive aftermarket, commercial vehicles, metalworking, landscaping, rail or wind, September 2026 is not a month you can defer to next year, because next year it isn't there.

• PPMA Total Show - September 22-24 | Birmingham. The UK's processing, packaging machinery and robotics show at the NEC, with 350+ exhibitors expected.

• CEDIA Expo/CIX - September 1-4 | Denver. Smart home, residential AV and integrated technology.
• Commercial UAV Expo Americas - September 1-3 | Caesars Forum, Las Vegas. Commercial drone operations across construction, infrastructure, agriculture and public safety.
• ASIS GSX - September 14-16 | Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta. The Global Security Exchange, covering physical and cyber security convergence.
• Salesforce Dreamforce - September 15-17 | Moscone Center, San Francisco. The largest enterprise-software user conference of the year.
• Intergeo - September 15-17 | Messe Munich. Geospatial, surveying and geodata - the natural companion event to the drone and digital-twin market.

• Première Vision Paris - September 1-3 | Paris Nord Villepinte. Fabrics, leather and materials sourcing for the fashion industry.
• Who's Next - September 5-7 | Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Ready-to-wear, accessories and lifestyle.
• Maison Shanghai and Furniture China - September 7-10 and 8-11 | Shanghai. A deliberately overlapping pair: Maison Shanghai at SWEECC for lifestyle-led interiors, Furniture China at SNIEC for the furniture trade.
• Maison&Objet - September 10-14 | Paris Nord Villepinte. Interior design, décor and lifestyle - one of Europe's defining home and gift markets.
• Paris retail week (September 15-17): NRF Retail's Big Show Europe and IFTM Top Resa run simultaneously at Porte de Versailles. NRF Europe expects more than 12,000 attendees from 60+ countries across 525 exhibitors.

• Middle East Energy - September 1-3 | Dubai World Trade Centre. Power generation, transmission and renewables.
• Oil & Gas Asia (OGA) - September 2-4 | Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The Asia-Pacific region's long-running oil, gas and petrochemical fair.
• SMM - September 1-4 | Hamburg.
• Yachting Festival de Cannes - September 8-13 | Cannes. Europe's flagship in-water boat show, split between Vieux Port and Port Canto.
• WindEnergy Hamburg - September 22-25 | Hamburg.
• MRO Asia-Pacific - September 22-24 | Singapore Expo. Aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul for the region with the fastest fleet growth, drawing 7,500+ attendees and 350+ exhibitors.
• Batimat - September 28-October 1 | Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. France's major construction and building trade fair, co-located with Equip'Baie, Interclima and Idéobain.

• Fine Food Australia - August 31-September 3 | Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Australia's leading foodservice, retail and hospitality trade exhibition, with the USA as its inaugural country partner for 2026. Three of its four days fall in September.
• Farm Progress Show - September 1-3 | Boone, Iowa. The largest outdoor farm show in the US, with live field demonstrations.
• Seafood Expo Asia - September 2-4 | Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Singapore.
• Saudi Food Show - September 27-29 | Jeddah Superdome. The show has relocated to Jeddah for 2026, positioning itself around Saudi Arabia's Red Sea trade and logistics gateway - one of the clearest indicators of how fast Gulf food-service procurement is scaling.

How to Choose When Everything Overlaps

September punishes teams who try to do too much. Three rules that hold up:

1. Pick the biennial shows first. SMM, Automechanika Frankfurt, IAA Transportation, AMB, GaLaBau, InnoTrans, WindEnergy Hamburg and IMTS are all even-year shows. An annual show you skip this year returns in twelve months; a biennial one costs you two, and many of September's largest industrial shows are biennial. Build the calendar around the even-year events first, then fill in the annuals around them.

2. Resolve the collisions deliberately, not by default. The week of September 14 is the worst of it: IMTS and AMB run head-to-head on different continents, IAA Transportation and bauma CONEXPO India open the same day, and Dreamforce, GSX, Intergeo, Kind + Jugend, GaLaBau and two Paris floors all land inside it. Decide which audience you actually need in the room and send your strongest team there, rather than splitting thin across two.

3. Protect follow-up capacity, not just floor time. A team working four September shows will generate more leads in four weeks than it can process in eight. The Q4 run continues immediately. Two September shows spill into October, and Munich follows straight after:

The Bottom Line

September 2026 is the year's peak. Tokyo Game Show, IFA, InnoTrans and IAA Transportation each drew well over 100,000 people at their most recent editions; eight major floors only exist in even years; and a single week in mid-September carries an unusual concentration of significant openings. The exhibitors who get value out of it are the ones who decided in August - they locked the biennial shows first, resolved the date collisions on purpose, and kept enough capacity in reserve to actually work the leads. The ones who treat September as a month to attend everything will finish it with a full badge collection and an unworked pipeline.
